FREMONT/EAST KINGSTON —The Wreaths Across America Programs in East Kingston and Fremont offer many opportunities for community members and organizations to honor and help our veterans.
Maybe you’d like to knit or crochet a hat for a homeless veteran. In September, volunteers began collecting homemade hats and currently have approximately 150 in hand. They gathered over 200 last year and would love to have even more to give this year. Fifty of these hats top the stockings and are stuffed with toiletries. Hats can be dropped off through December 19 at the Kingston Community Library in Kingston, during library hours.
Toiletries are needed to stuff those fifty stockings. Soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shaving cream, disposable razors, hand lotion and shampoo would be greatly appreciated. Again, please drop your donation off at the Kingston Community Library by December 19. You are welcome on Sat., December 20 at 10:00 a.m. to stuff the stockings for our homeless veterans who are serviced by the Liberty House in Manchester, and the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center in Haverhill, MA. New and gently used quilts and afghans are also needed.
Sponsoring a wreath to be placed on a veteran’s gravesite in East Kingston and Fremont is another option. Wreaths cost $15.00. Ten dollars cover the cost and delivery of the wreath. The remaining five dollars is given to the two homeless veterans centers previously mentioned. Full and partial sponsorships can be arranged for by phone. Please call 603-895-6658.
Volunteers are needed to unload the truck when the wreaths arrive as well as to place wreaths on the gravesites. The wreaths will be delivered sometime between Mon., December 8 and Fri., December 12. You’ll need a flexible schedule as they usually find out when the truck will delivering the wreaths the day before. Just call 603-895-6658 and the will add you to the list.
Perhaps you’d like to place a star on the Heroes Christmas Tree to remember a friend or family member who has served. There is no cost. Once again, please call 603-895-6658 and a star naming your loved one will be placed on the tree in front of the Fremont Town Hall during the holiday season. Currently, 500 stars decorate the tree in remembrance of our veterans.
On December 13 at 12:00 p.m., two Wreaths of Remembrance Ceremonies will take place. In East Kingston, please meet at the Veterans Memorial Stone in front of the East Kingston Fire Station on Depot Road. In Fremont, please join us at the Veterans Memorial Monument in front of the Fremont Town Hall on Main Street. These ceremonies are a part of a day of nation-wide ceremonies, including one held at Arlington National Cemetery, that remember and honor our veterans. Please bring your children so they can learn how important a sacrifice our veterans have made for their freedom.
For information regarding any of these opportunities to honor and help our veterans, both past and present, please call Gerry Tilley at 603-895-6658.
