EAST KINGSTON —Fall brings exciting new releases in the book world. Favorite authors are represented as well as first-time novelists. Margaret Atwood’s sequel to “Handmaid’s Tale”, “The “Testaments”, has not even been released yet and is already on the New York Times Bestseller list and it has been shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize.

It has been 34 years since the publication of “Handmaid’s Tale”. Interest has been revived with the TV series based upon the book. The novel is current and relevant posing the question “ Could this happen here?” We are all anxious to see what twists and turns the new plot will take. Atwood is a prolific author who has written much more than just dystopian fiction. Her work is varied from historical fiction to poetry and reinterpretation of the classics. She never disappoints.

Colton Whitehead is a young author whose breakthrough novel, “The Underground Railroad”, won both the Pulitzer as well as the National Book Award. His new novel, “The Nickel Boys”, is set in a juvenile reformatory in the ’60s. The storyline is based on an actual news article of the period but Whitehead weaves folklore and gothic twists to mine the topic of the disenfranchised...both black and white.
