HAMPSTEAD — This July 20 is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. To help celebrate, NHPBS will air the American Experience film, “Chasing the Moon”, a new six-hour documentary series about the space race, from its beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969 and beyond. The Hampstead Public Library is privileged to be given a preview clip of the series and is sharing it with the public on Thurs., June 13 at 12:00 p.m., and Tues., June 18 at 7:00 p.m. The clip is an excerpt from “Part Two: Earthrise.” The year is 1968. The country is rife with the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the assassinations of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and Senator Robert Kennedy. While the Soviets advanced their own program, NASA kept pushing forward and by the end of the year, showed the nation and the world something it had never seen before. Join us for this special 50-minute screening. There will be light refreshments, and a brief discussion afterwards for all who are interested.

In gearing up for a space themed Summer Reading Program, the Library shows the movie “Space Cowboys” on June 12 at 1:30 p.m. Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner star as retired Air Force pilots who are recruited by NASA to stop a runaway Russian satellite from hitting Earth. The four men were previously passed over for the space program, and they now get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams. All are welcome to join us for this funny and poignant film.

The final Community Tea of the season is a Salute to Dad and it takes place on Fri., June 14 at 2:00 p.m. It's a great opportunity to come together in a warm communal atmosphere for tea and conversation. Attendees are invited to share amusing and touching anecdotes about their father. They can also bring a photo to display. Naturally, participants are also welcome to bring their dear dad. Advance registration is required. Call the Library, 603-329-6411, or register via the Upcoming Events calendar on HampsteadLibrary.org.
