KINGSTON — Members of Scouts BSA Venture Crew 345 were recognized for their rescue of two fishermen on the Allagash River in Maine. The recognition took place at Lone Tree Scout Reservation in Kingston, where the crew meets for monthly campouts. The two men rescued brothers Michael Fiori and Larry Fiori, both Maine residents, were in attendance and reunited with the scouts who they credit with saving their lives.
On the night of June 3, the Fiori brothers were fishing on Umsaskis Lake when their canoes filled with water and capsized. The men swam for shore but were separated. Michael Fiori spotted smoke and was able to make it to the shore by the campsite Crew 345 had set up. The scouts brought him over to their fire and warmed him up before alerting the local ranger station to the situation. A group of the scouts then got in their canoe and found Larry Fiori further down the lake, staying with him until Ranger Steve Day and his crew arrived and safely pulled him from the water.
The scouts were recognized by members of Crew 345’s chartering organization, the Lone Tree Spirit Foundation, at its annual Spirit Day event on September 14.
