HAMPSTEAD – In Week 9 of the Hampstead Men’s Masters Basketball League, Captain Craig Wlodyka’s L&M Construction (6-3) rolled over Captain Stan Lewis’ East Coast Lumber (6-3), 64-51, while in the second game Captain Dave Rowell’s Gelinas Siding (6-3) topped Captain Bob Dudal’s Dunkin’ Donuts East Hampstead (2-7), 58-47. In the final game Captain Pat Curry’s United Business Machines (3-6) slipped by Captain Ken Wolenksi’s Village Vinyl (4-5), 56-53.

L&M took a 14-9 first quarter lead and then exploded in the second frame to double up East Coast at the half, 32-16. East Coast tried to cut the deficit to single digits in the third quarter, but still trailed 42-29 going into the final period which saw an even exchange of points and a 64-51 win for L&M. Kevin Young led L&M with 23 points followed by Matt Tulley with 14 points, Jeff Steenson 8 points, Scott Doyle 7 points, Craig Wlodyka 5 points, Howie Steadman 3 points, and Paul Ramos and Bob Edwards with 2 points each. East Coast was led by Stan Lewis’ 12 points along with Craig McGuire 11 points, Russ Evans 10 points, Scott True 7 points, Keith Therrien 6 points, Kevin Meagher 3 points and Gary Cebula with 2 points. L&M led in field goals, 22-20, and three-pointers, 3-2. East Coast led in free throws hitting 5 of 9 for 56% versus L&M’s 11 of 26 for 42%

Gelinas came out with the hot hand and grabbed a 21-7 lead and increased their lead to 34-17 at the half. Dunkin’ tried to get back into the game, but still trailed, 44-29, going into the final period where Gelinas held on for the 58-47 win. Kevin McCarthy led Gelinas with 16 points with a lot of help from Ken Gelinas with 9 points, Jason Kimball and Steve Thompson 8 points each, John Suprenant 7 points, Dave Wojichowski 4 points, and Dave Rowell, Dave Goyette and Mark Raumikaitis all with 2 points each. Dunkin’ was led by Dano Anderson with 17 points along with Ben Ruggles 12 points, Wayne Hamilton 8 points, Bob Dudal 4 points and Fred Malcolm, Ken Fure and John Sheehan all with 2 points each. Gelinas led in field goals, 19-15, while Dunkin’ led in free throw shooting, hitting 8 of 10 for 80% versus Gelinas’ 11 of 17 for 65%. Both teams had 3 three-pointers.

In a hard fought first quarter, Village took a slim 7-5 lead, but both teams got hot in the second frame with Village holding a 26-25 lead. Village tried to shake UBM in the third period, but was only able to hold a slim 40-36 advantage going into the final frame where UBM was able to finally take control and come away with the 56-53 win. Bill Whearty led UBM with 20 points along with Harry Williams and Brian Condon 11 points each, Dick Danner 7 points, John Keisling 4 points, Don Bell with 3 points and Pat Curry with 13 assists. Village was led by Mike Desmond with 21 points, Jim Whitehouse 13 points, Tim McDonald 9 points, Sean Morrissey and Ken Wolenski 4 points each, and Ross Huntington with 2 points. UBM led in field goals, 20-17, while Village led in three-pointers, 4-2, and free throw shooting, hitting 7 of 9 for 78% versus UBM’s 10 of 16 for 63%.
