Umpire Training

PLAISTOW —The Merrimack Valley Umpires Association (MVUA) has announced that the umpire training classes for men and women, as well as teenagers over 16, will begin on Thurs., July 11, 6:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s School, 80 Maple Avenue, North Andover, MA. Anyone who wants to be trained as a baseball umpire in MLB (Major League Baseball) rules should attend these classes. They will be held on Thursdays, continue on consecutive Thursday’s for the next seven weeks. The Mass Baseball Umpires Association (MBUA) umpire’s (MLB) exam will be administered at the end of the class. Candidates passing the exam will then attend clinics on mechanics and positioning.

“I am amazed that even though the MVUA has grown to over 200 members, we still have many games we are asked to cover,” said Steve Martinelli of Lawrence, MA, President of the umpires association. We are constantly being asked to provide umpires for leagues and we are not sure we have enough umpires to cover all of those games. We need more men, women, and teens to umpire games. “Our 16 year old members can earn $50.00 for a two hour Little League game which is a lot more than working for $7.00 per hour and flipping burgers,” said Ralph Wade, Plaistow, 1st Vice President. “This is a great part-time job for college students,” Wade said.

The cost for the seven-week program is $150.00. Anyone interested is urged to contact 2nd Vice

President Rande Chabot 603-437-8847 or email at for reservations and registration). Rules Interpreter Ron Annand will be teaching the class as he has done for the past ten years. Anyone interested should go to for more information about MVUA umpires.
