Maple School

DURHAM – UNH Cooperative Extension is working with NH Timberland Owner’s Association (NHTOA) and the NH Maple Producer’s Association

to bring the first annual Maple School to Granite State maple producers. The program will be held on Sat., October 27, at Winnisquam Regional High School in Tilton.

The school was carefully planned so every session has something for everyone, whether a backyard sugarmaker or large-scale

producer. The program is designed to take participants from the sugar bush to the table, whether producers are marketing wholesale

or selling their product direct to consumers at the farmer’s market.

Steve Taylor, former NH Commissioner of Agriculture and a maple producer himself, will be the keynote speaker, sharing his

unique perspective about the New Hampshire maple brand. Dr. Tim Perkins from the University of Vermont Proctor Maple Research

Center will discuss current research on maple production For those interested in equipment and supplies, there will be a small-scale

trade show, with dealers like CDL and Leader, exhibiting their products.

Registration is required. The cost is $35.00 for the day for classes only or $45.00 for classes and lunch. Registration deadline

is October 19. Visit www.nhwoods.org to register online and for a complete agenda of the day.

Questions about the first annual Maple School may be directed to Steve Roberge at (603) 352-4550 or steven.roberge@unh.edu.

  • Successful Conservation Collaboration

On June 17, the sophomore class of Sanborn Regional High School made a field trip to the Old Frye Town Forest, one of Kingston's five town forests, to assist the Kingston Conservation Commission in the removal of invasive plants from the area near the trailhead, notably, an extensive and aggressive patch of Japanese knotweed. This project was the culmination of the school's third year of intra-curricular collaboration with the Commission to address local environmental issues, and to make conservation an area of study and research. Congratulations from the Commission to the teachers and students for a job well done!
