Medical Scholarship

ROLLINSFORD - Thanks to a lifetime of hard work, successful farming in the blueberry fields of New Jersey and sound financial investments, NH native Samuel Yarnold and his wife Alice bequeathed over $800,000 in scholarship funds for NH residents.

Annual scholarships in the range of $1,000 - $5,000 are currently available for New Hampshire post-secondary students accepted to or enrolled in programs leading to an LPN, ADN, BSN, or MS in nursing; a BSW or MSW in social work; or an MD or DO in medicine. Applications for this year’s scholarships are due May 17, and will be awarded later this year.

According to nephew and scholarship trustee, Stephen H. Roberts, the Yarnolds retired to Rollinsford in 1958. Following various illnesses, they grew to respect the skills of the caring staff at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and Mary Hitchcock Hospital. As a result, they established a scholarship fund for individuals who may be unable to pursue further education due to financial circumstances.

“Sam and Alice were quiet, sincere and pretty much kept to themselves. Sam was very frugaland would only read a newspaper left over from a neighbor,” Roberts said. “In their later years both

Alice and Sam felt they were treated very well at Wentworth-Douglass and Sam was particularly fond of Dr. Danford, his cardiologist.”

Sam Yarnold died in 1994 at the age of 86. His life personified a full realization of the

American dream. The son of poor immigrant parents, he assumed family economic responsibilities at a young age. During his working years, Yarnold and his wife successfully cultivated and farmed large tracts of blueberry fields and cranberry bogs on his farm in Toms River, New Jersey. He was married to Alice (Pinkham) Yarnold for 52 years until her death in 1991.

Post-secondary students interested in scholarships should immediately contact the Alice M. Yamold and Samuel Yarnold Scholarship Trust, PO Box 2303, Dover, NH 03821-2303 to request an application.
