College for Older Learners

HAVERHILL, MA — Local residents 50 and older who are interested in learning are invited to attend a presentation about Northern Essex Community College’s College of Older Learners (CoOL) on Tues., September 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the college’s Haverhill Campus in the David Hartleb Technology Center, 100 Elliott St.

The CoOL program offers a series of seminars taught by seniors with an interest in the topic.

Individuals interested in CoOL will have the opportunity to meet with the fall 2013 season’s seminar leaders and learn more about the program.

Each seminar meets one day a week for six weeks. The cost is $30 per seminar.

This year’s seminar topics include Fun Films: People’s Choice; Edible Wild Mushrooms for Beginners; What’s Mine is Mine or You Earned It; Perennials Plus, Remembering the 50s; Mediation in Motion; In Search for Common Ground; The Birds, The Bees, The Trees, and the Environment; and Aging as a Spiritual Journey.

  •  Successful Conservation Collaboration

    On June 17, the sophomore class of Sanborn Regional High School made a field trip to the Old Frye Town Forest, one of Kingston's five town forests, to assist the Kingston Conservation Commission in the removal of invasive plants from the area near the trailhead, notably, an extensive and aggressive patch of Japanese knotweed. This project was the culmination of the school's third year of intra-curricular collaboration with the Commission to address local environmental issues, and to make conservation an area of study and research. Congratulations from the Commission to the teachers and students for a job well done!

  • Volunteer of the Year

    Atkinson Academy Elementary School has named its Volunteer of the Year for 2014. Timberlane Regional High School graduate Ashley Higham, right, received the award from teacher Meredith Bastien, pictured left. Ashley volunteered her services three days a week for two hours in 5-K Intensive Needs classes during the school year.
