Epping School Board News

---- — EPPING - Welcome to the Epping School Board News Corner for the May 16, 2013 School Board Meeting.

Guests – Nikki Carleton addressed the Board on her role as parent representative for and experiences with the new EHS competency-based grading and reporting system and requested a change requiring 4 to 6 summative assessments per assessed competency. This request will be discussed with teachers on the May 24th professional development day and a Board update has been requested for June.

Policy – Athletic policy has been referred to the Athletics Committee. It was reported that administration were also recommending changes in the areas of student discipline, absences, and academic eligibility. Board Directives – After discussion the Board decided to place a hold on making directives policy. The Board agreed to hold a work session to review Board policy and practices.

Administrator Reports – EES Principal – Grade 4 visited the State Capital and was greeted by Representative Jeff Harris and had their picture taken with Governor Hassan. EES students have been raising trout and will be releasing them soon. Methuen teachers visited EES to view the readers and writers workshop model of instruction. EES is hiring for several teacher openings and is planning for summer. Elementary parking and access to the back of the school will be restricted due to installation of the new playground. EMS/EHS Principal – The principal was excused due to a parent session on bullying prevention. The principal provided a written report noting that five teachers and the principal were participating in a NH Designing Quality Performance Assessments Institute. EMS parents expressed a desire to align the EMS grading system with the EHS system. Survey results were overwhelming in favor of an ABC, 0 to 100%, effort/work habit, and plus/minus grade system. Teachers were also highly in support of this change. No action has been taken, but administration is considering a process in which to include parents. EHS also recognized 16 students selected as NH Scholars.

Facilities/Financial – The Board approved safety and security measures per the safety and security assessment - surveillance, lock sets, door alarms, elementary parking gate, emergency responder key boxes, bulletin boards, and signage. The Board also approved refinishing the EMS gym floor. Administration recommended not renewing the Head Start lease due to increasing preschool needs and also in consideration that Head Start will be continuing their program in the area. The Board approved the recommendation.

Personnel – The Board approved the nomination of a grade 1 teacher, grade 8 science teacher, and varsity basketball coach.

Next Meeting – The next meeting is scheduled for June 6, at 7:00 p.m., in the Epping Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public and televised on ETV.
