EAST KINGSTON — The Melvin Alan Keddy Memorial Scholarship is given out of tribute to a man who served his country and his community throughout his life. In light of this, the recipients of this $500.00 scholarship will go forward to also serve their community.
In 1987, Mel decided to pursue a part-time job as a police officer in East Kingston. It was here that he and his wife had moved after marrying, and were raising two children. He is remembered by family as being extremely proud upon completing the police academy. Mel genuinely enjoyed being a small-town police officer, and earned the nickname “Uncle Mel” from residents. He was a warm-hearted man, who took a keen interest in those he met. To him, being an officer was an opportunity to help people, and see that his town was a better place. Eventually, in addition to his position on the East Kingston Police Department, he worked for the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department. Aside from being an officer, Mel was also the town’s Director of Emergency Management, a member of the Planning Board, and served as the liaison to the Selectmen from the Planning Board.
On the night of September 7,1995, Mel was assisting at an accident in the neighboring town of Kingston. It was there he was fatally struck by a drunk driver. His loss was deeply felt by his family and the entire community.
This scholarship is given to honor Mel; to continue offering assistance in hopes of bettering the lives of others.
