Social Media Safety

STRATHAM —Wiggin Memorial Library’s Teen Room and the Cooperative Middle School are pleased to announce a Social Media Safety Program for parents and teachers. Brett Whitmarsh, Social Media Coordinator and Tech correspondent for NBC channel WCSH 6 will be speaking at the CMS auditorium on Tues., January 22, from 6:30-8:30 pm. Brett will be answering parents’ questions about different social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) and the problems and concerns that can arise with their use among teens and tweens. Brett will discuss why 13 is the age limit set for social media sites, how parents can monitor and protect their kids online, and why what they post now can affect them years later, plus many other topics.

Speaker Bio: Brett Whitmarsh lives in Maine, and is the Social Media Coordinator for the NBC affiliates WCSH 6 in Portland, and WBLZ 2 in Bangor. He graduated from Oyster River High School in Durham, and then went on to start his career at the Emmy-award winning broadcasting school of Lyndon State College in Vermont. He joined WCSH in 2003. In 2011, Brett received a master’s degree in Interactive Communications from Quinnipiac University and began as the Social Media Coordinator for News Center (both WCSH6 and WBLZ). He became the Tech Correspondent in 2012.
