---- — EPPING —Welcome to the Epping School Board News Corner for the June 20, 2013 School Board Meeting.
Public Hearing – The Board held a public hearing on additional donations in the amount of $38,528 for the elementary playground. It was noted that the donations will complete the required revenue needed for the playground project. The Board approved the donations.
Guests – a. Two middle school students presented their projects based on 21st century themes. Music teachers presented an annual report on the general music, band, and chorus programs. An extended music field trip to New York City was also approved. The district speech and language plan and job descriptions were presented for approval. A final report was also given on the UNH speech study approved by the Board.
Policy – Emergency care and first aid practices were reviewed and updated in Policy EBBC. The Board conducted a first reading. Policy JICJ was also reviewed for cell phone use. The present policy was not recommended for revision as it clearly articulates inappropriate use. Annual updates were also provided on wellness and bullying prevention. The Board reviewed its decision on cooperative football uniforms. The recommended uniforms were approved.
Administrative Reports – The elementary principal’s report highlighted EES being selected as an UNH teaching intern site. Next school year teacher literacy sessions are being recommended based on successful results for mathematics. The middle and high school principal recommended that the middle school grading/reporting system align with the high school. The district leadership team has recommended that all schools implement a 0 to 100% scale, letter grade with plus and minus, and 4-3-2-1 effort/habit/skills grade system. A survey of middle school parents and teachers overwhelmingly supported this change. The elementary school will need to reverse the order of its effort/habit grade. The Board approved the recommendation. The superintendent distributed the draft goals and action plan for 2013-2014. This will be acted upon at an upcoming work session.
Financial – The Board approved the lowest quotes for the life insurance bid and food service equipment compressor quotes. The district has submitted a grant to receive 50% of the safety and security measures recently approved.
Personnel – The Board approved the revised substitute job description updating qualifications and notification. The Board approved the resignation of Special Education Teacher Matthew Cartmill and the nomination of Anne Kennedy for a Grade 3 teaching position.
