Middle-school students learn all about volunteers' careers

RAYMOND — Seventeen area businesses, twenty-one representatives, and one dog came to Iber Holmes Gove Middle School to be a part of their annual Career Fair in April. These volunteers filled the seventh and eighth grade classrooms and library.

Students participated in career awareness in two different ways. One, they were able to choose two careers they would like to hear more about and attend a twenty-minute class presentation on that particular career. The other approach was an interactive activity.

Students went in groups to the library where area businesses had set up displays. While there, the students were to approach a representative from the business and ask career questions such as 1) what is your career 2) how much education does it take to succeed in that career 3) what are the pros and cons of that career and 4) what subjects in middle and high school would help to go into that career. If a student asked a question, the representative stamped the student’s index card that they brought with them. At the end of this activity, if the students had four or more stamps, they were entered into a raffle.

Prizes won were gift bags from the Raymond Coalition for Youth, Dunkin Donuts gift cards, chocolates, anti-bullying bracelets and pencils, and school motto bracelets.

Participants were: Josh Civiello of Seacoast School of Technology; Carrie James, Dog Trainer from the Barking Dog in Exeter; Scott Payne, Raymond Detective; Sue Frotton, School Resource Officer representing the Police Explorers Program; Arlene French and Karen Doherty of Elliott Healthcare in Raymond; David Steadman, Arborist from the Northeast Shade Tree in Portsmouth; Lauren Bruce, Athletic Trainer from Access Sports; Liz Shuter and her cute little dog Abby from the Salem Animal Rescue League; Amanda Hughes and Jess Bick from Salon 27 in Raymond; Jason Garon, owner and P.T. from Excel Physical Therapy in Raymond; Charlaine Anderson, Representative from Walmart Distribution Center in Raymond; Kim Tyndall and Paul Pindris from the Raymond Online Newspaper; Darien Moran, Online Business “The Flower Connection”; Dustin Ramey, Financial Advisor from Edward Jones in Raymond; John Conchiglia, Tax Representative from H & R Block; Melissa Starin, Representative from the NHHEAF; and Marion “Mac” Overberg and Dorinda Priebe from Lamprey Dental in Raymond.
