RAYMOND — Representatives from the Raymond Coalition for Youth are headed to the Washington, D.C. area to join more than 2,000 substance abuse prevention specialists and advocates from throughout the country for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) 23rd annual National Leadership Forum.
“We are so excited to be able to spend a few days with other similar organizations from across the country, learning and honing our prevention skills to bring back to our community and share with the members of RCFY. Together we can strategize ways of implementing the great programs that can be of benefit to our students, families and communities to hopefully prevent the harmful effects and suffering that come from the misuse of drugs and alcohol abuse,” says Celeste Clark, Executive Director “We know we will come back reenergized and with new strategies to tackle these difficult issues.”
CADCA’s Forum will cover a wide range of topics - including how to prevent prescription drug abuse, how to create tobacco-free environments, develop policies to reduce underage and excessive drinking. There will also be classes associated with involving the community, especially the youth, in making positive change.
The coalition also plans to participate in state-wide meetings and a special session on marijuana legalization and medical marijuana at CADCA’s Forum.
The coalition has recently impacted the community by working together to bring a playground to Riverside Park. This playground not only provides a wonderful place for families to go and enjoy quality time together but also increases the amount of people in a great outdoor space, essentially reducing the remoteness of the location and the likelihood of it being misused.
The coalition also will meet with their U.S. representatives and senators at the Forum’s Capitol Hill Day event. We have appointments scheduled with Senator Shaheen and Representative Kelly Ayotte we are also trying to arrange a meeting with Carol Shea- Porter
Visit the Forum website for details about workshops and speakers at http://forum.cadca.org/.
The Raymond Coalition for Youth has been working in and with the community of Raymond since 2004 when a dedicated group of people came together to work and support our youth. Information reported that many of our youth were engaging in risky behaviors associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The community has come together and worked to create programming and awareness to address these issues and our numbers have come down significantly. We recognize that there is always more work to do but together we make a difference and an impact. To learn more visit our website www.rcfy.org or check us out on Facebook and twitter.
Would you like to get more involved? Join us at a monthly meeting; the next one is February 14, 9:00-10:30 a.m., at Lamprey Health Care in Raymond or you can also sign up for our newsletter.
