Successful Scarecrow Festival

I would like to thank all those who were involved with The Mary Bartlett Friends of the Library (Brentwood) 1st Annual Scarecrow Festival!

When we decided on a date for our first Scarecrow Festival, we advertised "Rain or Shine". We never considered that snow would be in the forecast! But the threat of the first snow storm of the year did not stop residents who came out to enjoy the afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Sat., October 29, the Festival began! The Basement Bookstore was open for business. Attendees enjoyed hot chili from Goody Cole's along with hot dogs and delicious baked goods. The children decorated pumpkins and participated in a parade. It is always fun to see the excitement on their faces as they show off their costumes!

But the highlight of the day was getting a good look at the scarecrows! In the weeks before the event, I would drive through the library parking lot nearly every day, to discover what new clever displays had been created.

On the day of the Festival, votes were cast for the favorites, and the People's Choice Award went to Swasey Elementary School scarecrow depicting a favorite teacher, Archie Schroeder. Category judging had taken place prior to the event with the Business Award going to Brentwood Chiropractic, the Youth Award going to the Edmiston Boys and the Group Award going to Swasey Elementary School.

A special thanks to our judges Linda Rousseau, Bob Gilbert, Phyllis Thompson and Eugene Orcutt. They confessed it was very difficult to choose just one award for each category!

We would like to give another Big Thank You to our sponsors: Accu-Book Services; Angel's Friends K9 Training and All About Dogs & Cats; Apple Annie's; Beebop Technologies; Brentwood Chiropractic Center; Buxton Oil; Donahue, Tucker & Ciandella; Goody Cole's Smokehouse & Catering Co.; Patti Murby at Face Works Plus; Scamman's Farm; Toss N Sauce; and an anonymous donor.

Our thanks to those who helped make our first Scarecrow Festival a success - despite the weather! There was a whole lot of effort put into planning the event and the ideas from our Team were outstanding.

We also thank the bakers, set-up workers, folks who helped with parking, cashiers for the book fair and food tables, costume parade leaders, pumpkin painting helpers - wow, so much volunteer support! It was a great community event to bring to our town. It was greatly enjoyed and we look forward to what the second Annual event will bring next Fall.
