Kingston, NH — Dr. Clayton H. “Pete” Birdsall, DDS, age 86, of Kingston, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
He was born on August 29, 1926, in Haverhill, Mass., and was the son of the late Dr. Clarence H. and Elizabeth C. (Pratt) Birdsall.
Dr. Birdsall was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Dartmouth College and The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged.
He started his dental practice in Haverhill, before moving it to Wentworth Avenue in Plaistow. He owned and operated his dental practice for over 50 years, retiring at the age of 79, due to health issues.
Dr. Birdsall was passionate about his patients and responsible for thousands of happy healthy smiles. Another great passion was his love of sports. Pete will be remembered by many for his natural athletic prowess in the areas of crew, wrestling, football, tennis, and golf. He was a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
Dr. Birdsall will be greatly missed by his family including his children, Clayton Jr. of Kingston, N.H., Mary Elizabeth of South Hampton, N.H., Johnathan of Charleston, S.C., and Daniel and his wife, Nancy, of Kingston; his brother, Benson Birdsall of Kingston; his niece, Lisa Berl of Charleston; and his brother-in-law, Iradj Khalkhali of Hendersonville, N.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine (Young) Birdsall, his sister, Barbara Birdsall Khalkhali, and his longtime companion. Shirley S. Lay. Pete was like another father to Shirley’s children, Brian, Barry, Robert, Todd, Jeff, and especially Barbara Lay Hanson.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family were invited to call on Wednesday, August 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, N.H. A memorial service took place on Thursday, August 29, at 11 a.m., at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Haverhill, 16 Ashland Street, Haverhill, Mass.
