Robert Allen Hughes, 86, died peacefully on March 15, 2012 at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home in Fremont, NH, where he received wonderful care for the last four years from their kind staff. He was born on May 29, 1925 in Bradford, MA, the son of the late Arthur O. and Evalena (Allen) Hughes.
Robert grew up in Bradford, MA and formerly resided in the town of Kingston, NH from 1959- 2000, before moving to League City, TX for 8 years. He served in the United States Navy as a Gunner’s Mate First Class from 1942-1946 during World War II and from 1950-1952 during the Korean War.
He was formerly employed at The Stables in Bradford, MA and at Hamel Leather in Haverhill, MA before becoming owner and operator of Granite State Cabinet Co. in Kingston, NH. He later opened Red Bell Antiques in Kingston in 1981 and ran the shop until he retired in 1999.
Robert was also very active in the community. He served as a volunteer fireman, police officer, and dog officer in the town of Kingston. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1088 in Kingston, NH and Post 29 in Haverhill, MA. A true “people person” he greatly enjoyed social events. He had a love of water and boating, and also held a pilot’s license.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Theresa C. (Rousseau) Hughes, of Fremont, NH; his son, Glenn Allen Hughes of Kingston, NH; two daughters, Shelley Ann Demaine of Nottingham, NH, and Kimberly Ann Shaw of League City, TX; 4 granddaughters, Carie Ann Pinheiro, Jessica Lynn McFadden, Brittany Nicole Demaine, and Kathryne Mary Rose Shaw; his grandson Steven John Shaw, Jr.; 5 great grandchildren, Trevor, Jacob, Tyler, Lylly, and Madison; his brother David Hughes of Maine; his sister Eleanor Magoon of Haverhill, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 5-7 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 11 AM at the First Congregational Church of Kingston, located on 6 Church St. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Kingston, NH.
