Earl N. Akeley
FREMONT – Earl N. Akeley, 80, of Main St., died on January 23, 2010, at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home in Fremont. He was born on March 11, 1929 in Saugus, MA, the son of the late Ansel and Aline (Fuller) Akeley.
A resident of Fremont for the last 8 years, Earl grew up in Lynn, MA and also formerly resided in Danville and Kingston. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was employed as a mechanic for many years at Cushman’s Bakery in Lynn, MA. He was also formerly employed for many years at Spaulding & Frost Barrel Company in Fremont.
A skilled handyman, Earl had the ability to fix anything and enjoyed woodworking and repairing automobiles. He was predeceased by his son Richard G. Akeley.
Earl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (West) Akeley of Fremont; his son Robert C. Akeley of Rochester; his daughter, Ronda B. Watkins of Fremont; seven grandchildren; his sister Geraldine Southard of ME; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara A. Crosby
BRENTWOOD – Barbara A. (Bitzer) Crosby, age 78, of Brentwood, formerly of Peabody, MA, passed away January 21, 2010. She was the wife of Roy A. Crosby, with whom she shared fifty five years of marriage.
Born in Burlington, MA, Barbara was the daughter of the late William and Greta (Lundgren) Bitzer. Barbara graduated from Wilfred Academy hair design school, enjoyed sewing, and had been involved with a church circle, as well as their bowling league. She was a former member of West Congregational Church, in Peabody. Spending time with her family and caring for her grandchildren meant the most to Barbara.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters Leslie Collins and her husband Kevin of Brentwood, Deborah Ingham and her husband Stephen of Hampton Falls; son Keith Crosby and his wife Jane of Raymond; grandchildren Amanda Jane Crosby, Christopher Lawrence Crosby, Ashley Lynne Collins, Rachel Jean Ingham, and Courtney Barbara Ingham; great grandchildren, Mickey Joseph Morrow and Lilly Grace Morrow; and her sister Dorothy Hederstedt of Harwich, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Donald E.”Woody” Wood
PLAISTOW – Mr. Donald E. “Woody” Wood, 80, a retired local banker of Plaistow, died Monday, January 25, 2010, at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, MA.
Born in Haverhill, son of the late Raymond and Lillian (Brown) Wood, he was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1947. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as a Staff Sergeant specializing in heavy weapons and was a recipient of several medals and battle stars.
Graduating from Northeastern University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 1959 and Williams College of Banking in 1962, his banking career of over thirty years began first at the Haverhill National Bank, where he was the bank manager at the Main Street office. He later served as the vice-president of the Arlington Trust Company.
In 1978, Mr. Wood was elected President and Director of the Plaistow Cooperative Bank. During his twelve year term as president and director, the bank’s growth in assets increased from $27, 000,000.00 to $134,000,000.00. During his tenure, he spearheaded the construction of the new three story brick facility located on Route 125 in Plaistow. He maintained an open door policy as president and many people still remember that he was always helpful regarding their financial needs. On many occasions, “Woody” gave people their first loan to help business owners achieve their dream and enjoyed working with them on a personal level.
He was a member of the Lorraine Post #29 of the VFW, Haverhill, the Carl Davis Post # 34 of the American Legion of Plaistow, The Saggahew Lodge of Masons, and The Plaistow Fish and Game Club, and a former member of the Haverhill Exchange Club. He served as a director of the Walnut Square Association, past treasurer of the American Cancer Society and longtime chairman of the Plaistow Board of Adjustment.
His many hobbies included snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and golfing. He also enjoyed time at his condo in North Conway and visits to Rangeley, Maine.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Marjorie “Midge” (Williams) Wood; his son and daughter-in-law, Gawain and Usha Wood of Hampton Falls; a sister Shirley Warring, of Prince Fredrick, MD; his many nieces and nephews, who were like his own children, Philip “Pep” Wood and his wife Patti, Harold “Buddy” Wood and his wife Kathy, Craig Wood and his wife Diane, Tracy Wood and his wife Ruth, Rodney Wood, Cindy Tierney, Donald J. Wood and Jamie Wood. He was predeceased by his brother Harold Wood and his nephew, Garry Wood.
Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow, NH.
His funeral service was held on January 29 at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, Plaistow. Burial with military honors was in Plaistow Cemetery. Donations in his name may be made to the First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, P.O.Box 144, Plaistow, NH, 03865.

Myron W. Cate
RAYMOND — Myron W. Cate, 79, of Hay Springs, Nebraska died peacefully at home on August 20, 2010. Myron was born on February 23, 1931 in Manchester. He was a resident of Raymond, until he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. He proudly served his country in both the Navy and then the Air Force during the Korean War. Myron's patriotism and strong love of American Freedom was seen as he was known to even carry a copy of the Bill of Rights and the US Constitution in his pocket.
