Edmund L. Pender

WINDHAM – Edmund L. Pender, 88, of Windham and formerly of Salem, and Waldwick, NJ, died December 6, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, following a brief illness.

Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, son of the late David F. and Margaret (Shannon) Pender, he was raised in Perth Amboy and Woodbridge, NJ. He served as a Technical Sgt. in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during W.W.II, and saw action in England, France, and Luxembourg as a member of the 90th General Hospital. He was a recipient of the European Theatre Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Pender graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and later received his MBA from Rutgers University. A Certified Public Accountant, he first worked as a partner in the firm of G.H. Kinglsey & Company in Manhattan, and later was a member of Pender and Dunleavy of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and later founded Edmund L. Pender, CPA, with offices in Englewood Cliffs.

Mr. Pender previously served as a County Committee Member of Bergen County and also as an adjunct professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. An active member of St Luke’s Catholic Church of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, where he served as head usher and as a volunteer on numerous committees, he also was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed tennis. A consummate gentleman and member of the National and New Jersey Association of Certified Public Accountants, he was very devoted to his wife, his family, his church and his career.

Mr. Pender was a resident of Salem for four years before moving to Windham in 2007, and was presently a member of St. Matthew’s Parish of Windham.

The husband of the late Mary P. (Kingsley) Pender and father of the late Carol F. Pender, and father-in-law of the late Frederick Eid, he is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lee and Russell Greaves of Spofford, Kathleen A. Eid of Danville, Joan K. and Alfred Lofgren of Kittery Point, ME, and Laurie J. and Richard Sweetser of Windham; a brother, Thomas F. Pender of Prescott AZ; also nine grandchildren and three great-grand-daughters.

Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow, NH.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 12, in St. Luke’s Church, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, with burial in Mary Rest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Luke’s Church, 340 North Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, 07423.



Thelma I. Sullos

EPPING – Thelma I. Sullos, 82, of 222 Blake Rd., died on December 9, 2009, at her home. She was born on May 28, 1927, in Unityville, PA., the daughter of the late Domer and Myrtle (Strong) Fenstermaker.

Thelma attended the Derr’s- one room schoolhouse in Lycoming Co., PA. in (Penn Township) from 1934-37. The Derr’s Schoolhouse closed its doors in 1937. She ended up going to the Sugar Run School, also in Lycoming Co. PA, from 1937-43. The Sugar Run School closed its doors in 1943. On May 28, 1943, Thelma’s 16th birthday, she took her 8th grade common school examination in the Fribley Meeting House in PA, and passed it. She got her education in a one-room schoolhouse.

In 1946, she moved to Blake Rd. in Epping, with her parents, and worked at the Exeter Hospital as a ward maid for 3 years.

She met her husband, James A. Sullos and they got married in April of 1950. She raised her four children on a dairy farm in Epping, and became a life long resident of Epping.

She was a homemaker who helped her husband James with the farming business. She was a hard working mom, who in the summer time, did a lot of canning her own fruits and vegetables from her gardens. In the winter, she would do a lot of baking, especially on the holidays, making her own pies and preparing large dinners. She also wrote letters to her friends and relatives in PA, keeping them updated on what was happening in NH. The family will miss her home cooking on the wood burning stove and their Saturday night tradition of hot dogs and baked beans. She had to cook all of their meals on that stove even in the summer. The family enjoyed the heat from the stove in the winter, but not in the summer. Thelma also loved houseplants and having flower gardens.

Thelma was pre deceased by her husband of 50 years, James A. Sullos (October 2000); her infant son, Albert J. Sullos (October 1950); her two son-in-laws, Robert Masotta of Epping (formerly of N. Reading, MA, June 2001), and Frank Silva of Raymond (June 2001); her grandson, Albert J. Silva of Raymond (Nov. 2007); her three brothers, Glenn Fenstermaker of PA (November 1959), Gordon Fenstermaker of FL. (formerly of Raymond, November 2008), and Grover Fenstermaker of Epping (December 2008).

She is survived by her two daughters, Rose Masotta of Epping, and Vicki Silva of Raymond; her two sons, Philip Sullos of Epping, and James Sullos of Greenland; and one granddaughter, Tonya Silva of Raymond; her two sisters, Grace Stackhouse of PA, and Edna (Shoemaker) Grimm of PA; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on December 12, at Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping. The Rev. Ronald Townsend officiated. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery, Epping. To sign an on line guest book, please visit www.brewittfuneralhome.com



Elinore G. Rice



HAVERHILL – Elinore Genevieve (Langley) Rice, 89, a lifelong resident of the “Riverside” section of Haverhill, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 at Merrimack Valley Hospital, after being stricken ill suddenly at her home.

Born in Stoneham, her family moved back to Haverhill shortly after her birth. She was the daughter of the late Russell S. and Elliane E. (Provost) Langley. She was a graduate of Crowell School, Class of 1934, and Haverhill High School, Class of 1938.

For many years, Mrs. Rice was employed as a special nutrition cook in the former Hale Hospital, retiring in 1984. She was quite involved in the city she loved, in its politics, and daily life. She worked on many campaigns, local and national going back to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her latest campaign was working with her family on her late son’s scholarship fund for Haverhill High School.

Her many memberships include Haverhill Women’s City Club, City Retirees Association, A.A.R.P., and Partners in Hope, of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A kind, sincere, woman, she was a proud matriarch, and lived for her family. “Ma” Rice’s cookie jar was never empty, and her door was always open, ready always for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The widow of Paul T. Rice, Sr., she leaves a son, Philip and his wife Darlene of Haverhill, MA; three daughters, Pamela O’Brien of Haverhill, MA, Donna and Donald Roberts of Atkinson, Melanie and her husband Joseph Altruda, of Northbridge, MA; daughter-in-law, Brenda Rice of Sun City, Fla.; grandchildren, Laurie Richards, Jacki Knouse, Kelly O’Brien-Langan, Brian and Timothy Roberts, Erin Dube, Shannon and Casey Rice, Allison and Laura DiSenso, and Gina and Matthew Altruda; great-grandchildren, Meghan Howland, Leighann Richards, Andrew, Max, Hannah, and Cameron Knouse, Kylie and Timothy Dube, Austin and Jayden Langan, Kaitlyn, Jonathan and Christopher Roberts, Tyler Rice and Nicolas Rice Kershaw, and Annabella Rice; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Paul T. Rice Jr., her sister, Natalie Poole, and her son-in-law, Larry O’Brien.

Funeral services were held on December 10 at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home (www.comeaufuneral.com), Haverhill, MA followed by burial in Atkinson Cemetery.
