EAST HAMPSTEAD – Mr. William J. Smith, 62, of East Hampstead, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury, MA.
Born in Haverhill, MA, son of the late William C. Smith and Emma Rose (Belanger) (Smith) Bergeron, he was also the step-son of the late Leonard E. Bergeron and brother of the late Nancy Rajotte.
Mr. Smith attended Haverhill Schools and the former Haverhill Trade School and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a Specialist 4.
He worked as a machinist at JMB Machine and Knight Tool before illness forced his retirement.
In his younger years, Mr. Smith was a coach for the Haverhill PAL Baseball League and was a member of several local bowling leagues. He also enjoyed watching golf tournaments, football , baseball and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell and Noelle Smith and Paul and Lisa Smith, all of Haverhill, MA; a daughter, Karen Blanchette of Bradford, MA; a brother, Lawrence Smith of East Hampstead; a sister. Barbara Maglio of Bradford, MA; a brother-in-law, Carl Rajotte of Manchester; six grandsons; a close friend, Linda Millett, of East Hampstead; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service was held on April 3 at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, Haverhill, MA. Burial with military honors were held on April 4, in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Haverhill, MA.
