Dedicated Firefighters Presented Awards

Plaistow Fire Chief John H. McArdle presented eleven Certificates of Appreciation during the annual Pay Night Supper, held at the John D. Fitzgerald Safety Complex (named after the longtime fire chief) at 27 Elm Street in Plaistow. Top photo: given in recognition of dedication and commitment to the mission of the department as a member of the Engine-7/Rescue-6 Replacement Committee.   • Citizen of the Year

    The Atkinson Lions Club is pleased to announce that Martin (Marty) Feuer, pictured, has been chosen as the Atkinson Citizen of the Year for 2014. Marty has been an active member of the community since 1951 having been a firefighter for many years and served on the Timberlane School Board. He was the former owner of Feuer Lumber Company, and has passed the torch (and the business) to his son John Feuer. Marty is a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving as a Glider Pilot and was shot down September 19, 1944 over Rethy, Belgium, and fought in the Normandy invasion. He has been married to his wife Eleanor, for more than 66 years and will celebrate his 93rd birthday on May 3. Please join the Feuer family and the Atkinson Lions to celebrate on Sun., May 4, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Congregational Church.

    The Granite State South Board of REALTOR®s Affiliates Raise Money for Veterans’ Charities. On March 4th, the GSSBR Affiliates Committee presented the Liberty House with a check for over $3,000 raised from the successfully sold out event GSSBR, Love and Laughter Comedy Night for Veterans’ Charities. The event was held on January 24th at the Atkinson Country Club.     Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
