Fremont Celebrates Land Acquisition

— The Town of Fremont recently completed purchasing 76 acres of forest land from the brothers Richard and Robert Smith. According to Forest Society Land Protection Specialist Mike Speltz  (second from the right above), "the citizens of Fremont believe they are the stewards of one of the most valuable aquatic resources in southern New Hampshire: the community's 824-acre Spruce Swamp". The new addition to the Glen Oakes Town Forest abuts the swamp, which is really a "fen" or ground water fed wetland, and is another important piece in "surrounding" this resource with forest buffer. Pictured above are, left to right, Dennis Howland, Chairman Fremont's Open Space Committee, Patricia deBeer, Fremont Conservation Commission's ace grant writer, Mike Speltz, and Dijit Taylor, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP).

LCHIP was a valuable partner providing some of the funding required. Other key partners include NH State Conservation Committee's 2012 Moose Plate program, the William P. Wharton Trust, the Davis Conservation Foundation, the Cricket Foundation, and the Fields Pond Foundation. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests holds the conservation easement on this parcel as it does with Glen Oakes.
