Kimberly Karchenes received a warm welcome as she began her duties on July 15 as Director of Music at the Congregational Church, 21 Front Street in Exeter. A resident of Cape Neddick, ME, she most recently served as Associate Director of Music Ministry at First Parish Church in York.

Linda Fagan of Plaistow was among three Northern Essex Community College employees to receive the quarterly employee recognition award for the third quarter of 2013. Fagan, an administrative assistant for NECC’s Division of Foundational Studies and Liberal Arts & Sciences for just one year, was nominated by her colleagues who praised her high work standards, service-oriented approach to the job, and a friendly, cooperative, and courteous manner.

John Albert, President and CEO of Home Health Foundation recently announced that Merrimack Valley Hospice has received a $15,000 grant from The Provident Community Foundation. Funds will be used to support the new seven-suite wing expansion of Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill. The addition of the new wing will allow for 21 private patient suites in total, of which two can accommodate pediatric patients. The wing will reflect the existing peacefulness of a home setting with patios, family gathering area, a care station and several common areas.

The Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce this year’s recipient of the 2013 William A. Brown Distinguished Businessperson Award has been presented to Scott D. Cote, President and CEO, Pentucket Bank. . Scott is well known in several area communities for his creativity and enthusiasm for supporting local nonprofit organizations, with a particular passion for youth organizations, low-income housing initiatives, and programs benefitting the elderly.

  • Citizen of the Year

    The Atkinson Lions Club is pleased to announce that Martin (Marty) Feuer, pictured, has been chosen as the Atkinson Citizen of the Year for 2014. Marty has been an active member of the community since 1951 having been a firefighter for many years and served on the Timberlane School Board. He was the former owner of Feuer Lumber Company, and has passed the torch (and the business) to his son John Feuer. Marty is a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving as a Glider Pilot and was shot down September 19, 1944 over Rethy, Belgium, and fought in the Normandy invasion. He has been married to his wife Eleanor, for more than 66 years and will celebrate his 93rd birthday on May 3. Please join the Feuer family and the Atkinson Lions to celebrate on Sun., May 4, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Congregational Church.

On March 4th, the GSSBR Affiliates Committee presented the Liberty House with a check for over $3,000 raised from the successfully sold out event GSSBR, Love and Laughter Comedy Night for Veterans’ Charities. The event was held on January 24th at the Atkinson Country Club.     Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
