Empower Martial Arts, located on Puzzle Lane in Newton, held its first annual fundraiser and vender event in December. It was a wonderful event with venders, local Girl Scout nail painting, and lots of great raffles. The total raised was $625.00 for the Newton Food Pantry. The staff appreciates everyone who came out and supported the event, which helped many local families. They hope to see you at the next event in the spring of 2013.
The League of NH Craftsmen represents the signature of excellence in fine craft through the work of nearly 800 juried members. This fall, ten craftsmen went through the League’s jury process for membership and met the League’s rigorous standards for creativity, innovation, and technical expertise. New local members include: Juried in Clay: Wendy Jackson of Newton makes functional pottery that features several layers of colored slip on the surface and lively sgraffito images of sea turtles, tree silhouettes, butterflies and stringed instruments. Juried in Carving: Terri Talas of Exeter carves sculptures and pendants out of fossilized wooly mammoth ivory, most of which averages 30,000 years old, and naturally shed caribou antler and buffalo bone and horn. As juried members, these craftspeople now have the opportunity to participate in events such as the annual Craftsmen’s Fair, NH Open Doors, and the League’s rotating Gallery exhibitions, and can sell their work in the League’s seven retail galleries located statewide.
