RiverWoods resident Andy O’Book was recently named Kiwanian of the Year by the Exeter Kiwanis Club for his continuous drive, dedication to the Kiwanis club, and the children they serve. O’Book has been a member of the Exeter Kiwanis Club for 20 years. In that time, he has proven to be tireless member of the club and supporter of local children’s charities. He is also past president of the club and a former member of its Board of Directors.
During the recent installation of officers held at The Old Salt restaurant in Hampton, outgoing President John Perkins announced that O’Book was being recognized as Kiwanian of the Year.
Between tending to his raised bed gardens and visiting with friends and family, Andy worked diligently to obtain sponsors for the Annual Children’s Charity Golf Classic, cooked and sold hamburgers and hot dogs at the Exeter UFO Festival, and worked to ensure that the inaugural Pizza Bowl was a success.
“With twenty years of fundraising, thousands of hot dogs, and plenty of hard work under his belt, Andy has become a key member of this volunteer organization.” says Bill Smith, Exeter Kiwanis President. “The Kiwanis motto is ‘Serving the Children of the World” and Andy does this nearly every day.”
Kiwanis International includes 8,400 clubs with nearly 600,000 members in over 80 nations. Last year, Kiwanis clubs donated more than $107 million through nearly 150,000 service projects and almost 6 million volunteer hours. Between 2005 and 2010, as a global project in coordination with UNICEF, Kiwanis members and clubs contributed more than $80 million toward the global elimination of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the leading preventable cause of mental retardation. Beginning in 2010 Kiwanis International joined UNICEF to launch a new worldwide health initiative, The Eliminate Project, dedicated to wiping out maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT), which kills more than 100,000 babies worldwide each year.
