---- — EXETER — Susan Desjardins, Major General, United States Air Force, Retired, was the featured speaker at the annual Christmas luncheon of the Exeter Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held December 7 at The Old Salt in Hampton.

Desjardins, who is also Chairperson of the National Defense Committee for the Exeter Chapter DAR, spoke to members and their guests about Today’s Air Force, paying tribute to the nearly 650,000 women and men who serve on active duty and in the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

Desjardins, a New Hampshire native, graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1976. She entered the Air Force Academy as part of the first class to admit women and graduated in 1980, serving for thirty-two years.

As one of the first women pilots in the Air Force, Desjardins flew transport and tanker aircraft, accumulating nearly 4,000 hours of flying time. She has commanded units at every operational level.

Desjardins was also the first female Commandant at the Air Force Academy, serving for three years as Commandant of Cadets. Most recently she was Director of Plans and Policy at Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base Nebraska, where she oversaw nuclear war plans; space, cyberspace and missile defense, and development plans to combat weapons of mass destruction.

Desjardins’ talk to the Exeter Chapter DAR underscored the importance of understanding and appreciating how the Air Force and its sister services –the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard –defend our freedoms and contribute to the nation’s well-being, as well as global peace and stability.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution advocates a strong American military defense in order to preserve our American heritage of freedom, protect the U.S. Constitution and ensure the survival of our national sovereignty.
