Margaret Elliott Earns Boston Cane


Atkinson Selectman Co-Chairman Philip V. Constantino, second from left, presented the Boston Post Cane to Atkinson’s oldest resident, Margaret B. Elliott, 98 years of age. Ceremonies were held at the Atkinson Town Hall, located on Academy Avenue. This practice started on August 2, 1909, by Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post newspaper. He presented to the Board of Selectmen in 700 towns in New England a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post Newspaper to the oldest citizen of the town.
