Senior Holiday Luncheon

NEWTON - At no cost for Newton’s Seniors (60 and over), Newton Recreation is sponsoring a Holiday luncheon at Roma Ristorante, 29 Middlesex St., Haverhill, MA, on Wed., December 11, at 12 noon. Transportation is on your own.

To sign up, go to recreation@newton-nh.gov and send an email with your name, address and phone number; go to Town Hall and let Mary know in the Selectman’s office, with your name, address and phone number; or mail in your request to be a part of this event to Recreation at Newton Town Hall, 2 Town Hall Road, P O Box 378, Newton NH 03858.

Please note that there is a space limit of 70 people and we expect this to fill up FAST! Do not delay this opportunity to celebrate the holidays with a choice of meals, a take-home favor, and the company of fellow Newton Seniors. This is a Newton gift to one of our valued classes of citizens.

  • Citizen of the Year

    The Atkinson Lions Club is pleased to announce that Martin (Marty) Feuer, pictured, has been chosen as the Atkinson Citizen of the Year for 2014. Marty has been an active member of the community since 1951 having been a firefighter for many years and served on the Timberlane School Board. He was the former owner of Feuer Lumber Company, and has passed the torch (and the business) to his son John Feuer. Marty is a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving as a Glider Pilot and was shot down September 19, 1944 over Rethy, Belgium, and fought in the Normandy invasion. He has been married to his wife Eleanor, for more than 66 years and will celebrate his 93rd birthday on May 3. Please join the Feuer family and the Atkinson Lions to celebrate on Sun., May 4, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Congregational Church.

    Meredith, NH — Elwood (Al) Shaw, 93, of Center Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Forestview Manor in Meredith. He was the beloved husband of the late Greta L. (Sykes) Shaw, to whom he was married for 62 years.

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
