Youth Celebrate 4-H Week

BRENTWOOD — More than six million young people across the country celebrated National 4-H Week, which takes place annually during the first full week of October. Rockingham County 4-H celebrated the great things that the 4-H youth development program offers young people and highlighted the incredible 4-H young people who each day work to a make a positive impact on their community.

“I have learned so much throughout my years as a 4-H’er and met so many people I never would have known. 4-H has shaped the person I am,” said Morgan King of Epping. “Next year I will be attending the University of New Hampshire for Music Education. I know the work I’ve done in 4-H will help me in the future.”

Local 4-H members kicked off National 4-H Week on October 6 with a kayak trip at Odiorne State Park, led by professional kayak guide, Peter Sawtell of Seven Rivers Paddling.

Rockingham County 4-H joined millions of young people across the nation to become scientists for the day during the sixth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day on October 9. This year’s project was titled, “4-H Maps & Apps.” The set of activities turned young people into geospatial thinkers as they design and map their ideal park, use GIS mapping to solve community problems and contribute data about their community to the United States Geological Survey.

4-H is the youth development program of the nation’s Cooperative Extension System. It is a community of young people across the globe learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.
