SANDOWN — Sandown Recreation offers the following activities taking place at the Ed Garvey Recreation Facility located at 25 Pheasant Run Drive in Sandown (unless otherwise noted).

BALL ROOM DANCE: Registration is now open for the ten-week Sunday evening fall session of the popular Ballroom Dance class with dance instructor Bill Vanderhoof. Beginner I, Beginner II and Intermediate classes are offered September 22 though December 8. Beginners with no experience will comfortably ease into the steps to the Foxtrot, Rhumba, Swing and Merengue. Those with prior ballroom dance experience are welcome to register for Beginner II or Intermediate class. The cost is $115.00 per resident couple and $125.00 non-resident. Registration is by couple only and your partner may be anyone age 16 or older.

SENIOR LINE DANCE: The six-week fall session of Senior Line Dance takes place on Tuesday mornings, September 17– October 22, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., with instructors Kathy and Tom who will guide you through the easy-to-learn steps. Join the fun and get a little exercise too. The cost is $10.00 for residents and $12.00 for non-residents. No partner is needed. For Sandown seniors, who may be experiencing financial hardship, please speak with the recreation director. Requests are treated confidentially.

ARCHERY: When was the last time you tried something different and fun? “Archery in Motion, LLC” of Concord will provide two levels of Olympic Style Target Archery for anyone ages 8 through senior citizen on Mondays from September 9 - September 30. Beginner Class takes place from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and Advanced Basic from 6:00-7:00 p.m. National Archery Association Certified Instructors will teach participants the basic fundamentals of shooting target archery while focusing on safety and form. The Beginner Class is for those with little or no experience and those who would like to brush up on their skills. Advanced Basic Class is for those who have taken the Beginner Class and are looking to keep improving their skills. Archery can be a life long sport for anyone of any age. The cost is $60.00 for residents and $65.00 for non-residents with a $5.00 discount for additional members from the same immediate family. Sandown seniors 60 and older pay $55.00 per participant. Fee includes instruction and equipment use.

  • Citizen of the Year

    The Atkinson Lions Club is pleased to announce that Martin (Marty) Feuer, pictured, has been chosen as the Atkinson Citizen of the Year for 2014. Marty has been an active member of the community since 1951 having been a firefighter for many years and served on the Timberlane School Board. He was the former owner of Feuer Lumber Company, and has passed the torch (and the business) to his son John Feuer. Marty is a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving as a Glider Pilot and was shot down September 19, 1944 over Rethy, Belgium, and fought in the Normandy invasion. He has been married to his wife Eleanor, for more than 66 years and will celebrate his 93rd birthday on May 3. Please join the Feuer family and the Atkinson Lions to celebrate on Sun., May 4, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Congregational Church.

    Meredith, NH — Elwood (Al) Shaw, 93, of Center Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Forestview Manor in Meredith. He was the beloved husband of the late Greta L. (Sykes) Shaw, to whom he was married for 62 years.

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
