Duathlon/Road Race

RYE - The 17th annual Rye By-the-Sea Duathlon and Road Races are scheduled for Sat., June 1, at 8:00 a.m. Race events include a 5K run/walk and a Duathlon.

Individuals or teams competing in the duathlon run a 5K, followed by a 17-mile bike ride, finishing with another 5K run.

Both the 5K and duathlon begin at 1237 Washington Rd., Rye, at the Learning Skills Academy (at corner of Washington Rd. and Lafayette Rd.). Parking is available at Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland.

Registration is available online at www.ryebythesea.com. Online registration closes on Wed., May 29. Walk-in registrations are accepted on May 31st from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., and on Sat., June 1, from 6:00 – 7:30 a.m. Rates are slightly higher for walk-in registration. The 5K is a scenic “cross country” run on dirt and wood-chip covered trails through Rye Conservation land, while the duathlon includes breathtaking views of the ocean. The duathlon is sanctioned by USAT. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in all age groups for each race. Early registration is encouraged. The first 250 people registered will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

The Rye By-the-Sea Duathlon and Road Race is an event of Annie’s Angels Memorial Fund, Inc. located in Stratham. Annie’s Angels is dedicated to helping families struggling with the challenges of life threatening diseases and disabilities by connecting neighbor to neighbor and friend to friend in a caring fund raising network.   • Citizen of the Year

    The Atkinson Lions Club is pleased to announce that Martin (Marty) Feuer, pictured, has been chosen as the Atkinson Citizen of the Year for 2014. Marty has been an active member of the community since 1951 having been a firefighter for many years and served on the Timberlane School Board. He was the former owner of Feuer Lumber Company, and has passed the torch (and the business) to his son John Feuer. Marty is a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving as a Glider Pilot and was shot down September 19, 1944 over Rethy, Belgium, and fought in the Normandy invasion. He has been married to his wife Eleanor, for more than 66 years and will celebrate his 93rd birthday on May 3. Please join the Feuer family and the Atkinson Lions to celebrate on Sun., May 4, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Congregational Church.

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
