Single Stream Recycling
EAST KINGSTON – East Kingston is now fully using the convenience of single stream recycling. Single Stream consists of combining recyclable glass, aluminum, cans, plastics(#1 through #7) and papers all in one. In the past, materials had to be sorted by category in order to recycle properly for curbside pick-up. “What this does is that there is no limit to the amount that residents can recycle and they don’t have to sort,” says Teresa Pendell,a member of the Solid Waste Removal and Recycling Committee(SWRRC). “It also has a great impact on saving the environment and helps promote a greener way of life”. The SWRRC has been working over the past year to assist the Selectmen with the upcoming expiration of the town’s contract for solid waste removal and recycling. The work the Committee has done includes researching vendors, soliciting bids, holding public meetings and making recommendations to the Selectmen. Rob Caron, Chairman of the group, notes that the Committee has been hard at work coming up with a new approach to the pressing issues of solid waste removal and recycling. “With single stream recycling and continued diligence from the residents, the town can anticipate potential revenue from recycled materials.” The key to making this happen is education. Ron Morales, another member of the group comments that “Our most important endeavor is to help educate and assist the townspeople in learning more about the value of recycling and proper disposal of all materials. As well as getting potential revenue for our recycling efforts, composting is another great way to recycle and reuse resources which were disposed of before.” The 55+ developments in town will also participate in this new solid waste removal and recycling initiative as individual dumpsters will be designated for specific materials.” This really integrates the entire town on this matter and was one of the goals of the committee. “says Caron.
