Films at The Music Hall

PORTSMOUTH —The Music Hall will close the summer with a month of exciting films in both the Historic Theater and The Loft. All films at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Rear Window 1954 (August 22): A convalescing photographer (Jimmy Stewart) spies through his apartment window with binoculars into the apartments across the courtyard and becomes convinced that, within one of them, a murder has taken place. Grace Kelly also stars.

Vertigo 1958 (August 23): Retired detective (suffering from acrophobia) turned private investigator (Jimmy Stewart) investigates the strange activities of an old friend’s much-younger wife (Kim Novak), all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.

North by Northwest 1959 (August 27): A New York advertising executive (Cary Grant) is mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and is pursued across the country while he looks for a way to survive. With Eva Marie Saint and James Mason.

Psycho 1960 (August 28): A Phoenix secretary (Janet Leigh) steals a great deal of money from her employer’s client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man (Anthony Perkins) under the domination of his mother.

The Birds 1963 (August 29): San Francisco socialite (Tippi Hedren) pursues a potential boyfriend (Rod Taylor) to a small Northern California town where events take a turn for the bizarre as birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people in increasing numbers and with escalating viciousness.

Film Matters: Elemental (August 22): Elemental follows three outsiders who are obsessed by nature and driven by a deep desire to change the status quo. Rajendra Singh, an Indian government official gone rogue, mounts a national crusade to save the Ganges River. Activist Eriel Deranger leads a David and Goliath fight against the oil giants who are destroying her homeland in the Canadian Tar Sands. Australian inventor, Jay Harman, is attempting to halve the world’s energy consumption by mimicking natural systems. Separated by continents, each character is part of a global story about water and climate change that goes beyond the issues to reveal the public triumphs and emotional scars of life on the front line. Discussion panel and Q and A to follow film.
