Lessons and Carols

Carriage Towne News

---- — KINGSTON — Trinity Church will hold a traditional Lessons and Carols worship service on Sun., December 29, in its chapel at the New Creation Healing Center, 80 Route 125, Kingston. The service begins at 10:00 a.m., and the public is invited.

“Lessons and Carols” was first observed at Truro (England) Cathedral in 1880. Edward White Benson, the bishop, said his purpose in creating the service was partly to help people’s spirits soar and partly to keep his flock from enjoying too much of the wrong kind of festive spirit in the local pubs. Nine passages from the Old and New Testaments are read interspersed with familiar and beloved carols which illustrate those lessons.

The popularity of the service spread rapidly. Many people listen on public radio to the annual service of Lessons and Carols from King’s College, Cambridge, England.

Leading the music for the service will be the Rev. Canon Mark A. Pearson, Trinity’s rector. Canon Pearson was a professional organist / choirmaster at one point and brings to the music of Trinity quality and sensitivity.

Trinity Church worships every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. As you drive up or down Route 125, note the progress, even in the snowy weather, of the much larger chapel being erected at New Creation. It’s just north of the intersection with Hunt and Newton Junction Roads.
