PLAISTOW – The Pollard school staff is very excited about an upcoming addition to their school. This spring, a sixteen foot aluminum frame greenhouse will be installed. The greenhouse project is being lead by Bryce Whittaker, Eagle Scout Candidate from Troop 18 in Plaistow, as part of his Eagle Scout program.
An Eagle Scout project is designed to be a community service project that benefits an organization other than scouting. Other Troop 18 projects included the repair and paint for the Plaistow town gazebo, construction of an informational kiosk at the P.A.R.C. as well as extensive expansion and trail work in the Plaistow Town Forest.
This Greenhouse Project has four phases: approvals and permitting, fund raising, design and acquisition, and finally, the build! The approvals are in the works and the fund raising is continuing. Bryce has raised funds by soliciting local organizations, receiving generous donations from the PTA, The Lions Club and The Knights of Columbus. In addition, the Pollard School staff sponsored a successful yard sale and flamingo drive which combined, raised over $2,000

This greenhouse project is the long time dream of Shirley Toscano, a second grade teacher at Pollard School. In addition to the educational aspects of this program, the School is hoping to use some of the produce grown. This idea is in part from the Healthy Eating Initiative through Michelle Obama’s “Lets Move” campaign to combat childhood obesity. Bryce wrote to, and received a letter from the First Lady encouraging him to continue his efforts!
The installation date is scheduled for early March.
