ABE/GED Classes

Carriage Towne News

---- — EXETER —The GED® test will change at the end of 2013. Anyone who has not completed the current test will need to start all over in January 2014 with a brand new high school equivalency test. The high school equivalency certificate issued by the NH Department of Education will be based on the HiSET exam rather than GED beginning in 2014.

Registration for Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and General Equivalency Diploma (GED®) prep classes begins in September at Exeter Adult Education in the Tuck Learning Campus, Entrance D, 30 Linden Street, Exeter. All adults interested in improving their reading, writing, and math skills, speaking and reading English, or studying to take their GED are urged to attend registration day.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are designed to help any adults who may not have completed high school and who would like to improve their skills in reading, writing or math. Some adults learn to read or do fractions for the first time. Others learn how to write letters fill out forms, and gain confidence with math. Classes are small. A counselor talks with students about personal and career goals. ABE classes are free.

When an adult is ready to prepare to take the GED exam, he or she may enroll in the GED prep class. This intensive class is offered to students who want to brush up on their skills in reading, English grammar, writing, and math to enable them to pass the exam. The fee for this course is $80 and includes Math and English books. Limited scholarships are available for those who need financial aid. Leslie Haslam, Director of Exeter Adult Education, added, “Students should come to school even if money is an issue. We will work it out for every student who wants an education.” Classes are held in the day and evening. Classes meet during the morning on Mon., Wed., and Fri., from 9:00 a.m. to noon and during the evening on Monday and Thursday, from 6:30-9:00 p.m.

For adults who are not native speakers of English, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Exeter Adult Education offers beginner, intermediate and advanced level classes day and night. Morning classes meet on Mon., Wed., and Fri., from 8:30-10:30 a.m. At night all three levels meet Monday and Thursday from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. ESOL class placement and consequent schedule is determined by an intake assessment, so all prospective students should plan to attend registration day. All classes are held at Exeter Adult Education in the Tuck Learning Campus, Entrance D, 30 Linden Street, Exeter.

Registration schedule is as follows: Mon., September 9, 9:00 a.m. for ABE/GED morning program; Wed., September 11, 9:00 a.m. for ESOL morning program; Thurs., September 12, 6:30 p.m. for ABE/GED evening program; and Mon., September 16, 6:30 p.m. for ESOL evening program.
