NEWTON – The Carriage Barn Equestrian Center is pleased to host a day of Evaluation, Maintenance, and Appraisal of antique and modern horse drawn vehicles on Sun., May 18.
The Carriage Barn will host this event in its 1890s era restored antique carriage barn, which was moved to its present site from a gentlemen’s farm in Weston, Massachusetts. As a special treat, the Andover, NH Lions’ road coach will be on display as well as other antique vehicles from the 1700s and 1800s. This vehicle is a very rare example of a road coach, which were manufactured in Concord. It is believed that this is the only road coach still able to be used in parades and other special functions. Anyone interested in restoration and preservation of antique carriage, fire apparatus, military or any other horse-drawn vehicles are encouraged to attend.
Guest speakers / appraisers will be Jerry Rider and Jerry Trapani. Mr. Rider has collected and restored carriages since 1968. He has been a member of the Carriage Association of America since 1968 and has served on various Association committees, as well as serving as President from 2004 to 2007. Jerry has restored over 50 vehicles in his own shop including about 25 Brewster coaches and carriages. He has presented programs about vehicle identification, restoration, and vehicle accessories at several conferences.
Jerry Trapani has had extensive experience over the last 20 years with various types of horse drawn vehicles. He and his wife Rita started the Paumanok Driving Club on Long Island, NY became involved with the American Driving Society & the Carriage Association of America. They have been involved with pairs, tandems, four in hands and have participated in many clinics throughout the US. They have won several carriage restoration awards. Their current projects include two beautiful sleighs and a full size carousel horse.
