Exeter Library News

EXETER —The Exeter Public Library’s new summer reading program, Bust-a-Book, for children leaving third, fourth and fifth grade competed in the first Team Reading Bowl event on July 26. The program is designed for participants to read one book in July and one in August. Half way through the month, the DVD is screened to our readers. The July Quiz Bowl delved into the story, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. Two teams competed head to head and answered questions about the book. Winning teams moved on to compete in the next round until there was just one team standing. Competition was fierce and there were several tie breaker situations. One contestant who was “manning the buzzer” commented, “It feels like my heart is beating out of my chest!” Grand prizes, gift certificates from WaterStreet Bookstore, were awarded to the members of the winning team. Prizes were awarded to all participants to include coupons from local businesses and books donated by the WaterStreet Bookstore to the library for this event. The children were thrilled. The August book, “The Golden Compass” by Philip Pullman, is currently being read. The books are provided by the New Hampshire State Library Book Bag Program. The DVD will be premiered on Friday, August 9 at 9:30 a.m. We anticipate the Team Reading Bowl, on Fri., August 16 to be another thrill ride! All of our Wednesday special programs are available to participants. On Wed., August 7 the Boston Museum of Science will present SuperCold Science and Wingmasters will be at the library on August 14 with five species of North American birds of prey.
