EPPING - The Harvey-Mitchell Memorial Library is hosting “Baked Beans and Fried Clams: How Food Defines a Region” on Thurs., May 2, at 7:00 p.m. Yankee Magazine’s Edie Clark will examine how contemporary life has distanced us from distinctive New England foods, and how these classics have defined our region for generations. Funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council, this program promises to be full of New England flavor!

Monday Munch and Movie on May 6th will feature “Silver Linings Playbook”, the multiple award-winning 2012 film starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, whose performance earned her the Oscar for best actress, and Robert De Niro. The movie begins at 12:30 p.m. Bring a lunch!

The Epping Library’s Spring Tea Party for children will be held on Sat., May 18, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Young ladies and gentlemen of Epping and neighboring towns are invited to this special day of dress-up, old fashioned crafts and games, and yummy treats. Please call Miss Tracie at 679-5944 to RSVP so there will be enough tea and cucumber sandwiches for all.

Lizzi Borden took an axe, or did she? On Thurs., May 23, Dr. Annette Holba of Plymouth State University will illuminate the circumstances of the famous double homicide that took place in Fall River, MA, back in 1892. This program is funded with a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council and begins at 7:00 p.m.

As summer steadily approaches the time has come to rally the teens who help make the Summer Reading Program a success. The next meeting of the SRP Volunteers will be on Thurs., May 9, at 4:15 p.m. Students who are finishing 5th grade or higher are eligible to become volunteers and may work from just a few hours to several days each week, depending on their availability. The program will run from late June to mid August. Call Miss Tracie in the children’s room for more information about this terrific group of summer helpers.

    Meredith, NH — Elwood (Al) Shaw, 93, of Center Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Forestview Manor in Meredith. He was the beloved husband of the late Greta L. (Sykes) Shaw, to whom he was married for 62 years.

  • Jo Ann Hughes, 79

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
