NEWTON — The Evening Book Group will meet on Mon., September 23 at 6:00 p.m. Discussion will be held on the book “The Red House” by Mark Haddon. Copies are located at the front circulation desk for those who would like to attend the meeting, or as an independent read.

Join us on Sat., September 21 for Bingo for Books at the Library! We will celebrate Newton Town Day with this special event to be held for all ages. The program will be held during our open hours of 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Library Card Night is scheduled for Wed., September 25 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Children and adults are invited to come in for their first library card, or come in for a complimentary replacement. Light refreshments will be served.

Thank you to the many that purchased tickets to York’s Wild Kingdom in York, Maine. This fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Gale Library was a great success. The proceeds will be used towards the needs and services of the library.

For those who enjoy card games, visit us on Wednesday evenings to play a game or two of cribbage. Games are held each week at 6:00 p.m. Instruction will be given on the game if you would like to learn.

Yarn Club continues each Friday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Bring your knitting, crocheting or other craft to share an afternoon with pleasant company. Experienced crafters are here to assist you in your current or next project.

    Meredith, NH — Elwood (Al) Shaw, 93, of Center Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Forestview Manor in Meredith. He was the beloved husband of the late Greta L. (Sykes) Shaw, to whom he was married for 62 years.

  • Jo Ann Hughes, 79

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
