ATKINSON - Now is the time to improve your foreign language skills with the library’s language database service, Transparent Languages. Over 80 languages are available with step–by-step online tutorials for learning a new language. Go to the Kimball Library website at www.kimballlibrary.com and click on the Transparent Language icon. Once you are registered you can access Transparent Language through your home computer via the Internet, or a mobile device. Don’t miss this opportunity.
Details for the second ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’ on December 8 from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon, are as follows: On the second day of Shop and Drop the elves have whispered to me... “Let’s make a tree ornament!” Santa’s elves will be helping your children make an “I Spy” tree ornament. If you or your child would like to see a sample, please drop by the library and see the craft on display in our lobby.
The movie selected for the December 8 “Drop ‘n Shop” is: “An Elf’s Story” which is based on the bestselling Christmas tradition “The Elf on the Shelf”. Nine year old Taylor McTuttle has reached a crossroads. Does he believe Santa Claus really knows who is naughty or nice? Does he even believe in Santa Claus anymore? An Elf’s Story is the inspirational tale of Chippey, the enthusiastic young scout elf who is assigned by Santa to restore Taylor’s belief in Christmas magic. This movie runs for approximately 20 minutes.
As a reminder, if you are shopping for e-readers… did you know that we have three regular Kindles, one Kindle touch, and one large (DX) Kindle available for borrowing? Now that the hoopla has died down regarding the Kindle, our library devices have a much shorter waiting list. If you do not have an e-reader of your own, or if you’d like to read something that we have purchased for our Kindle, then you are in luck! We have over 50 adult bestselling titles loaded. We add more titles as time goes on so there is always something new. Give us a call to put a Kindle on hold for you. These are perfect for taking on vacation—an entire library in one place! We also are open to suggestions when it’s your turn to borrow. Please submit requests and we’ll see if we can accommodate your taste.
In addition to the Kindles mentioned above, we now are also sporting a Nook Simple Touch e-reader. Our Nook has young people in mind. This Nook is pre-loaded with the 2013 nominees for the Isinglass and Flume lists. The Isinglass books are nominated by middle school students, while the Flume titles are nominated by high school students. This means the Nook is slated for tweens and teens even though adults may be interested in teen fiction. We are asking that someone the age of 18 or older be the one who actually checks the Nook out because of the replacement cost value. Please consider checking out the Nook for your tween or teen reader. It may also be a way to get your reluctant reader started into the world of ebooks. You may place a hold on the Nook over the phone or from your computer.
