East Kingston Library News

By Diane Sheckells
assistant librarian

---- — EAST KINGSTON – Book Clubs Real and Virtual: Oprah started it all back in 1996 with her first Book Club: Deep End of “friends” resulted in the “Oprah effect”. Her ability to touch millions of readers lifted unknown authors to fame and was a shot in the arm to the publishing business. Libraries benefited with increased readership and the Book Club became a fixture in our daily lives.

We have our own book club at the East Kingston Public Library and we are happy to use the state’s inter-library loan program to order multiple copies of a title for private book groups. New Hampshire even has a Books-To-Go program. Individual libraries host book bags with multiple copies of a title and sample discussion questions. Our bag contains The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake.

Just starting out or thinking of starting a club? Check out: The publisher features some excellent book club titles and excerpts at their site. You can sign up for their newsletter and keep abreast of popular club titles. Our staff of diverse readers are also happy to help with title suggestions.

Try a virtual book club online at: This site is a great spot to keep track of books you are reading or plan to read, write brief reviews and find friends who share your reading preferences. Read your club selection on your e-reader. Go to our website to borrow ebooks through Overdrive:

Check out our website often not only for book club resources but because the library is the heart of the East Kingston community.

Bring the family for a special Halloween performance by Steve Blunt on Sat., October 27. Spooky songs and stories will be followed by a costume parade so dress in your spooky best!
