EPPING — One month into 2014, patrons and friends of the Harvey-Mitchell Memorial Library have likely noticed some changes. As the library building approaches its 50th Birthday on April 12, the staff is working hard to spruce up the interior. Several hard-working and creative souls have volunteered innumerable hours cleaning, painting and generally beautifying the library, and they’re not done yet! Keep watching for a stairway of stacked books, the completed game table upstairs, and new paint and characters on the children’s room walls.
Not quite as visible is the newly established fine system for overdue items. In an effort to get wayward books and movies returned sooner rather than later, fines will be automatically assessed on patron accounts, ten cents per day for late books and one dollar each day for late DVDs, with limits of $10.00 and $15.00 respectively. Accounts with overdue items will be frozen until the items come back and fines are paid. With more than 1,500 items overdue at the end of 2013, there is hope that the new system will encourage their return and prevent similar problems in the future. Curious about when your book or DVD is due? Check the card in the pocket. The most recent date stamped is your due date. Books can be renewed over the phone once, but after that the book must be brought into the library to make sure no one else is waiting for it before a second renewal can be offered. DVDs must be brought in to check for any holds on the title before a second check-out will be possible. Remember: Books are checked out for two weeks, DVDs for one week.
Second Saturday Matinee Movie will feature the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on Sat., February 8 at 1:30 pm in the children’s room. Popcorn will be provided, but movie-goers are invited to bring additional snacks to share. Beverages in spill-resistant containers are encouraged.
Epping’s public library is open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information, call 734-4587, or the children’s room desk at 679-5944.
