PLAISTOW —The library will be closed Thurs., July 4 for Independence Day.

Summer reading is under way at the library! Adult patrons who wish to participate in “Groundbreaking Reads” should sign up at the library with their name and library card number. When signing up they will receive a $5.00 coupon (credit) toward Plaistow Public Library fines, and one raffle ticket that can be used toward our weekly Barnes & Noble gift card drawing or the Summer Fun Bag. Gift card winners are drawn every Monday morning for the previous week’s tickets. The Summer Fun Bag drawing will be Thurs., July 18. For the duration of Summer Reading each book read will earn one raffle ticket, to be used toward any of the adult SRP raffle prizes. Wacky Wednesdays give opportunities to get extra tickets: Spin to Win on the Wheel to find out how many tickets you win!

The Teen Summer Reading program features the “Dear Teen Me” Book Club for grades 9-12 on alternate Tuesday nights at 6:00 p.m. beginning July 9. Registration is recommended. This literary selection is required reading for all TRHS students over the summer. The Teen Summer Reading theme is “Beneath The Surface”, will feature raffle prizes and special programs and activities relating to “Under the Earth”, “Under The Water”, “Subcultures & Steampunk.”

Each of the six weeks of Summer Reading’s “Dig Into Reading” theme has a different sub-theme with crafts, activities, movies and special events associated with that week’s theme. ‘Prehistoric Pastimes’ Summer Reading Week 2: join us for crafts, activities, and games relating to dinosaurs, fossils, and archaeology! This program is recommended for ages 3-12, and intended for those enrolled in the Plaistow Public Library Summer Reading Program. Prehistoric Pastimes meets at 2:00 p.m. on Thurs., July 11 for ages 3-12. Space is limited; please register. Visit the library every Wednesday evening throughout the summer for a family movie relating to that week’s Summer Reading theme. Movies will begin at 5:45 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Registration is required. All Ages. The next weeks’ themes include Week 3: “Buried Treasure,” Week 4: “Underground Fantasy,” Week 5: “Dive Into the Deep Sea,” Week 6: “Earthmoving Madness.” Raffle prizes will also be given after weeks 3 and 6.

    Meredith, NH — Elwood (Al) Shaw, 93, of Center Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Forestview Manor in Meredith. He was the beloved husband of the late Greta L. (Sykes) Shaw, to whom he was married for 62 years.

  • Jo Ann Hughes, 79

    Sandown, NH — Jo Ann (Phelps) Hughes of Sandown, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by all of her children at home. She was born in Little Bend Kentucky, to Beatrice (Shepherd) Phelps and John (Cat) Phelps in 1934. Jo Ann was predeceased by brothers, Marcus Phelps, Johnny Phelps, Forrest Phelps and sisters, Juanita Phelps, and Jeanette (Phelps) Vincent. She is survived by brother, Donald Quiggins of Georgia; sisters, Geneva (Phelps) Stanley of Kentucky, and Frances (Phelps) Bratcher of Tennessee who had just visited Jo Ann in September of 2013.
