Hunger Walk a Success
The 27th annual Exeter Area Interfaith CROP Hunger Walk was a huge success on Sun., October 25 with over 225 walkers enjoying a glorious day and demonstrating great community compassion. Through this wonderful event almost $20,000 was contributed by neighbors and friends to support the hunger-fighting efforts of Church World Service, both here locally and around the world.
As a result of the 2009 Hunger Walk, our local food pantries will receive approximately $5,000 to aid fellow area residents in need, and some $15,000 will make possible the global work of Church World Service. Local agencies that benefit from the Exeter Area Interfaith CROP Hunger Walk include Exeter Congregational Church Food Pantry, Feed My Lambs, Newfields Community Church Food Pantry, Pilgrim UCC of Brentwood Food Pantry and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
The funds raised here in the Exeter area and in CROP Walks across the U.S. will make a difference in the lives of people in some 80 countries around the world – from working with AIDS orphans in Africa, to aiding farm families in Central America and continuing assistance to hurricane victims in the Gulf coast of the US.
Thank you to all who participated and worked so hard to make this year’s CROP Walk such a resounding success. Special kudos to the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Exeter (FUUSE) who raised over $3,800 this year. First Unitarian Universalist Society of Exeter, Faith Lutheran, Greenland Community Church, Stratham Community Church and St. Michaels Parish all obtained more than 55 donations each! Kudos also to Kim Lord of Faith Lutheran Church, Dwight Totten of St. Vincent de Paul and Andrea Renz of St. Michael Parish who each brought in over $1,100 in pledges. Great support was received from the youth in our community. Phillips Exeter Academy and Exeter High School each had over 30 walkers. North Hampton Junior Girl Scout Troup #675 also had great turnout.
Area churches participating include the Christ Church Episcopal, Exeter Congregational Church, Exeter United Methodist Church, Faith Lutheran Church, First Unitarian Universalist Society of Exeter, Greenland Community Congregational Church, Kensington Congregational Church, Newfields Community Church, North Hampton UCC, Pilgrim UCC Brentwood, North Hampton UCC, St. Michael Parish, Society of St. Vincent de Paul Exeter, and the Stratham Community Church. Students from Exeter High School, Phillips Exeter Academy and over 35 independent walkers also participated and helped make October 25 a wonderful, fun day.
Special thanks to our T-Shirt Sponsors including Arnold Thrift Shop, Blue Moon Café, Buxton Oil, Dodge’s Agway, Highland Hardwoods, IAP Sales, Lamprey Brothers, New England Truck Tire Centers, Ocean Bank, RiverWoods at Exeter, Tobey & Merrill Insurance and the Water Street Bookstore. Because of the sponsors generosity walkers who raised $150.00 or more in donations for CROP Walk received a free CROP Walk T-shirt.
A new CROP Hunger Walk Banner was made possible through contributions by sponsors including Infinite Imaging of Exeter, New England Truck Tire Centers and Tobey and Merrill Insurance. Music during the event was provided by Bob Sellon of Stec records and Alicia Rossman, 2009 Miss New Hampshire contestant, entertained with several songs focused on hunger issues. Returning walkers were rewarded with chocolate bars donated by Lindt of Stratham and cookie coupons provided by Me and Ollie’s Bakery and Cafe. We were glad for the supportive presence of the Taoist Tai Chi members.
The van from St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry led the procession of 225 walkers on this sunny Sunday afternoon.
Volunteering, walking, donating – we all have shown that citizens of the Exeter area are truly citizens of the world. See you next year at the 28th annual Exeter Area Interfaith CROP Walk!

To Hampstead, Kingston, and Plaistow:
The recent resignation of one of your seven State Representatives to the New Hampshire House has triggered a special election. There will be a primary on December 8, 2009 for the two Republican Candidates. That will be followed on January 12, 2010 for the special election between one Republican and one Democrat. I represented the district since its forming in 2002, until a narrow loss in November 2008. I have represented Kingston in other redistricting prior to that since 1990. My first election was a special election. I know from that experience, that it will be difficult for any one who has not served before to get acclimated. I will not have that problem. Most of my experience in the NH House has been on the Finance Committee. I served in leadership positions on that committee for the majority of my tenure. Public spending is the main reason that I run. There is no reason that government cannot adopt the latest measures that are created in the private sector relative to efficiency in running an operation. I have always represented the taxpayer first. Through the years I have been able to find many opportunities where the spending could be reduced without sacrificing service to us the citizens. I am very experienced at using the tools of the legislature for these projects. That includes the Legislative Budget Assistants, the Fiscal Committee, and the Performance Audit Process. My latest project that I initiated is developing. My colleagues are whittling away at state cars being used just for employee commuting. There are many challenges ahead in our state. We need to balance the budget while still keeping our competitive edge over the high tax states that surround us. We need to find a long-term solution for the State Retirement System so we continue to attract talented dedicated employees. We need to attract good businesses to our state that will offer satisfying employment. I have worked in all these areas. I ask for your support to continue to do so. I am retired, and am able to devote full-time to being your Representative. You will need some one who puts the taxpayer first. I have been proud to have so many of you give me your good wishes and support in the past. I will continue to work for you to earn those many good wishes. I thank you.

On behalf of the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, we would like to thank the community for a wonderfully successful FurBall held at Newburyport City Hall on October 17. Nearly 200 people came out for the event, despite it being a brisk evening! Over 300 donated items were available for our guests to bid on.
We would like to thank all who participated—volunteers, media, donors, and other friends. We deeply appreciate the support of the MRFRS and its mission. The funds raised at this event will support our low cost spay/neuter programs and our adoption/rescue program for homeless cats. Just this year, we have rescued and adopted 316 cats and kittens and spay/neutered over 2000 cats in our low cost programs. Additionally, we have responded to over 3000 calls on our Hotline for help and assistance.
Again, thank you for your support and for helping to make the FurBall such a resounding success.

“A Season of Change”
The morning sky is pale blue, its softness is revealed as the clouds that drift aimlessly beneath it part, the golden rays of the sun seeking a path of warmth and light, steam toward a quiet and waiting earth.
It is late fall, a time to open our minds to the exquisite reflection of tranquility, serenity, and breath-taking beauty that nature, once again, has placed before our eyes.
There is a symphony being played here, as songbirds dart in and out, back and forth, between the glistening barren limbs of the now leafless trees, carrying twigs, corn silk and straw in their beaks, preparing their nests for the coming winter.
The meadow is covered now in a blanket of red, gold, bronze and yellow leaves. It’s as though the design and colors had come from the palette and brush held in some fine artist’s hand. A wisp of wind disturbs this colorful blanket and changes its design once again.
It’s getting colder now as the days grow shorter, the daylight dims, and the early evening sky is tinted in swirls of lavender, red, and blue of the sun as it filters through the few remaining clouds of daylight.
As the darkness of night casts its spell over the land, time seems to stand still, caught in a void between fall and winter, as nature gathers us up in her arms in a moment of timeless beauty.
Seeking the spiritual gifts of joy, peace and love, one only has to let the powerful presence of this day to enter their hearts and settle in their souls, to allow their dreams to guide them into a world of enlightenment, a place we can only go once we close our eyes at night and dream.
This writing is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Lois E. Chase.

Mosque on 9/11 Site

To the Editor:
I write in response to a letter published in Carriage Towne News on July 29. The writer expressed dismay that a Muslim group plans to open a mosque near the site of the World Trade Center terrorist attack. The writer suggests that, if this is "allowed to happen," it will somehow indicate that America has failed to win the battle against terrorism. - August 5, 2010
