NH Voter ID Requirements

In a recent Letter to the Editor, Mr. Everett Edmunds explained that he would not vote this year because of the recently imposed NH Voter ID requirements . He also asked where the Tea Party libertarians stood on this issue. While not a Tea Partier, I'll share my libertarian view with him.

That the NH's Secretary of State has never recorded a case of voter fraud, does not mean that it has never happened. Politics is brutal and corrupt , and I cannot believe that fraud is not an inherent part of the process. During the NH Primary, undercover activists asked for ,and were given ballots after giving poll workers the names of deceased citizens. So to say such things don't or can't happen is nonsense.

As a libertarian, I share Edmunds abhorrence of government intrusion. However, behind the heavy hand of government, is the validation that voting gives to the process: The votes are counted and the majority often imposes its will on the minority.

As Ben Franklin said, “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding on what to have for dinner.” Unfortunately, Mr. Edmunds must comply with the dirty rules if he wishes to run with the wolves.
