Collins McCarthy for Newton Selectman

My name is Trisha Collins McCarthy from Newton. I am running for re-election for the Newton Board of Selectman. I currently serve as Chairperson for the Board of Selectmen, and selectmen-liaison for Conservation Commission, Emergency Management Department, Stewardship Committee, and Chair of the Safety Committee.

I have a leadership background, which includes law enforcement, business management, and real estate (licensed in both MA and NH). I’m proud of my reputation for professionalism, honesty, strong ethics, patience, and the ability to listen. I was the 2012 President for the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and served as Secretary/Treasurer for two terms, giving me a strong back ground in budgets. Yearly, I participate in Habitat for Humanity Builds to help those that have lost their housing due to storm events. As a result of going to assist the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, I was awarded Honorary Colonel by Governor Bob Riley from the State of Alabama.

As Selectman since 2007, I have accomplished many tasks including grants, assisting the Selectmen Office Manager, Town Administrator and Bookkeeper when they have asked and attended quarterly regional selectmen meetings for the last six years. I promise to continue working in the best interests of the Town. My passion for learning extends down to our employees and I encourage education and training. Here is a list of some of the classes I have taken: Municipal Budget & Finance, The Right to Know Law, Maintaining a Positive Workplace, Pipeline Emergency Response & Damage Prevention, Robert’s Rules of Order and Preventing Workplace Harassment & Discrimination.

As a former Police Officer, public safety is one of my passions. I have been trained in investigation, and specialized in domestic violence, rape and assault. As a result, I work closely with the Emergency Management Department, Police & Fire and our Road Agent during emergencies. This includes going house to house for wellbeing checks, keeping logs, providing the “Alert Now” phone messages during emergencies and working with the EMD and FEMA to get reimbursed for the money spent during weather related events. I have past exams for the National Incident Management Systems classes for IS100, IS200a, IS700a, IS702a, IS800b and the NH Department of Safety Division of Fire Standards & Training & Emergency Medical Services. For the past five years, I have worked on Newton’s Storm Water Management Plan with our Department Heads and Environmental Protection Agency to complete the required report EPA.
