Carriage Towne News
---- — I am a big fan of the Opinion pages of the Carriage Towne News. When I receive my copy each week, I immediately turn to these pages to read the letters to the editor. I usually read them all. Some letters make me laugh, some make me happy, and some make me angry. Everybody has an opinion. In this land we enjoy the right to express those opinions openly. This is one of the hallmarks of a free society.
But in this week’s edition (February 21), I found something disturbing. A frequent contributor, Robert Grier, revealed that he had received an anonymous letter in the mail that threatened him and his family. Some reader who disagreed with Mr. Grier’s opinion lacked the decency to express those objections in this open forum of the opinion pages. Since it is apparent that this anonymous character is reading these pages, let me address him or her directly.
Dear Anonymous: “Coward” is only one of many words that fit your character. Others would be “bully” and “thug.” You do not understand freedom. Whatever your opinions may be, they are worthless because you are afraid to put your name to them. You are the opposite of a patriot.
