Hateful Language Unnecessary

Hateful Language Unnecessary

For years I have been a big fan of the Carriage Towne News “Opinion” pages. I read each and every letter (and Mr. Kappler’s column), with interest. I appreciate reading opposing views when they are well written and make political points. I have close friends who differ drastically from me politically, and we are able to have civilized discussions because we are adults and care about each other’s feelings.

A few weeks ago, Mr. Robert Grier wrote about receiving hate mail because he writes about his views. His letters are always well written and he gets his points across without offending anyone. This is how it should be done.

In todays’ paper (14-March), I read with dismay a hateful diatribe from a reader in Atkinson who levied unbelievable insults at me and all of those who believe as I do. He called us prisoners, drug dealers and criminals. Our teachers are polluting our children’s minds? How so? We don’t like talk radio? I guess he doesn’t listen to Stephanie Miller or Ed Schultz. Then he compares us with Hitler, Stalin, and Lenin. I finished his letter and wanted to cry. What happened to this man to make him so full of hate?

There are lots of things that I don’t like about the Republican platform but I certainly don’t hate those who vote for them. Diversity is important and it makes our country great. Hatred like this is what is causing gridlock in Washington. We need to educate the narrow minded so that they can see both sides equally.

I hope it won’t be necessary for me to change my name so I won’t get hate mail too.
